Under CSA Standard B335-15, an operator must receive a minimum of 8 hours of supervised practice and successfully complete a practical evaluation. After completing the evaluation, the operator is deemed competent. There are two important parts to this program:

Basic Skills for People Who Use Lifting Devices (Required Module)
  • Skills needed to operate a lifting device
  • Responsibilities and rights
  • Classification of lifting devices
  • Hazard recognition, assessment, and control

Note: This foundational module does not include a final exam.

Safe Use of Lift Trucks (SOLT)
  • Device inspections and reporting
  • Conducting pre-use inspections and reporting requirements
  • Understanding principles of stability and importance of device capacity
  • Safety considerations for devices with different types of fuel sources
  • Safe work and operator procedures

Final Exam and Practical Evaluation (needed for full certification)
  • Final test online (you can take it up to three times and get a passing score of 75%).
  • Your boss or supervisor will do a hands-on practical evaluation.
  • Tools and guidance for practical evaluation are available to help with consistent assessment.
  • Reminder of CSA requirements: at least 8 hours of supervised practice and a passing evaluation
